He was a third-wheel, a spare part, I don't take that light.
It's like he was hopping on someone's wi-fi (wi-fi-why).
We weren't encrypted, had no protection from his attacks.
I was the only one on the network who minded Dear Max.
'It's Maximilian, it's German' he would say.
And he would correct you; you couldn't keep those protests at bay.
He spent three summers in Cologne and two winters in Val d'Isere.
Came back with a central Europe accent.
'Oh some of us, we just have an ear.'
I said I had two, you should have seen his face.
My girlfriend liked him more; clearly he was much more urbane.
Dear Max, you're floating like the breeze
Off of this here cliff into the sea.
Say hello to the gulls for me.
Say hello to the gulls for me.
He was buried in July, all my family, they were there.
I even saw some people cry. It's amazing how much they care.
I got distracted by a bee buzzing around somebody's head.
There was a buffet at Max's Family's, I was happy to be fed.
Then I went into his room and I started to rifle around.
I delved into hidden cupboards, surprised at what I found.
Lots of photos, lots of pictures of my girlfriend.
On closer inspection, I was always in them.
Someone had drawn hearts on my shoulders.
Dear Max, you're floating like the bee.
I never knew and now you won't haunt me,
Either way you were a third wheel.
So say hello to the gulls for me.
